WTB JPs, 4 silver

It appears (from the PTR) that come 4.0.6 that we are going to able to exchange justice and honor points for trade goods. The full announcement can be found here but the pic below does a better job:

A lot of players are now running out of things to do with JPs. Our gear is 346 across the board, we are running heroics and so JPs are beginning to stockpile. For those more PvP minded the situation is similar with all honor upgrades having been purchased.

Having a sink for those points is sensible, and Blizzard have already said the prices would be high. People are already complaining they are too high but I believe Blizzard has kept in mind that trade goods are a source of income for many many players, so killing these markets would cause mass complaints.

However what does interest me is how they have priced within the new system. Looking purely at Cael alliance prices:

OK to explain. In the table are the 7 items that can be bought with JPs/Honor. Next colomn is how many you buy with a purchase, unit market price, and the fourth colour in the value of each of the seven purchases in gold.

Next is the JP price, and with a simple division the we reach a rough estimate of the value each JP in silver coins. For honor prices just double the last number.

As you can see the prices vary within a small band from under 2.5 silver up to over 6. Doesn't sound much does it? Sounds like Blizzard have done a good job eh?

Well, not really. The top price is more around two and a half times the value of the bottom price. Put it is way - would you exchange five stacks of elementium ore (approx 450g) for four stacks of embersilk cloth (approx 240g)?

I hope we will see a few tweaks in the pricing, because this is one of the methods Blizzard introduce to normalise the market. When frozen orbs became a currency, the variation in the price of the eternal elementals was reduced. Now instead of just a subset of the trade market, this new exchange rate will normalise a far wider group. Although I don't see prices dropping dramatically because of this new exchange, I do see that the two items listed above at the top prices (i.e. Savage Leather and Greater Celestial Essences) dropping as people sensibly putting their spare JPs/Honor into these for the greatest gold return.

That is not the only JP dump we have.
Enchanters: buy and disenchant the 346 Offhand for 950 JP. A shard is worth 70g on my realm -> 7,37 s/JP
Jewelcrafter: buy and cut epic wrath gems for 110 JP, vendor them for 9g -> 8,18 s/JP
Anyone else: buy epic BC gems for 78 JP, vendor them for 5g -> 6,41 s/JP

As you see, if they don't alter the prices the new NPC is worthless, since we already have better options to dump our JP. And those aren't even bound to market prices

They may have done better than you suspect. Market variations between servers can account for almost all of the price differences you're showing. For example, on my server, leather is lower than that, while both heavenly shards and cloth are higher. Cloth probably double. Herbs lower (though that could depend on whether there's an equal chance at all the herbs, or a higher chance for the lower cat herbs?).

It's not all that unreasonable to assume that they set prices to result in approximately the same JP/silver conversion for all items. Could be they screwed up, but also possible we're seeing evidence of baseline average pricing across all servers, and may be able to extrapolate from the JP cost how far off the norm our servers are.

Nice article. And Lancore brings some very interesting data as well.
